Zay Bundy, 18, Virginia Football Star Leaves Lasting Community Legacy

In Virginia, a small-town football field just got a lot quieter.
Xzayviia “Zay” Bundy — a multi-time All-State linebacker, starting quarterback, and the 2025 Class 1 Defensive Player of the Year — died on Monday, Feb 9, in Tappahannock. He was 18.
Bundy was a four-year starter for Essex High School, where he became one of the most dominant players in program history. Known for his physical presence on defense and leadership on offense, he earned All-State honors each season and most recently committed to play football at Shepherd University in West Virginia.
His sudden passing has stunned the tight-knit Essex County community. With “broken hearts and profound sorrow,” his family announced his death in an obituary published Thursday, Feb. 12.
Bundy was described as a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend who had a presence on and off the field.

"Zay was a true leader with a bright spirit and a loving heart," loved ones said. "His presence brought light into every room, and his impact on our community is undeniable."
"His passing has come as a complete shock, and the sadness we all feel is beyond words."
Beyond the field, friends say Bundy had a personality that made people smile. A GoFundMe created in his honor references his well-known habit of texting friends asking for a “quick $20” to place a parlay bet — something that became part of his charm.

Now, organizers are asking supporters to send that “final CashApp request” to help his family cover funeral costs and support his mother during this unimaginable time.
"So many people have reached out asking, 'how can we help?'" Kristin Brooks wrote. "During this incredibly difficult season, donations will help cover the costs associated with laying our beloved Zay to rest — sending him home to rest peacefully with his Granny."
Bundy leaves behind his parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, grandparents, extended family, and a community that watched him grow from youth athlete to state star.
Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 20, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Washington Funeral Home in Tappahannock. His funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, at noon inside the Essex High School auditorium — the same school where he built his football legacy.
Interment will follow at Beulah Baptist Church cemetery in Tappahannock.
"Zay was loved by so many, and we are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community," Brooks added. "Thank you for standing with his family and helping us send him home with the love and dignity he deserves."

Essex High’s stadium lights will shine again. Games will be played. New players will take the field.

But No. 1 — the two-time All-State linebacker who helped put Essex football on the map — will never be forgotten.
