Tonie Morgan Celebrates Breaking Kentucky's Single-Season Assists Record

A New Era for Kentucky Women’s Basketball

Tonie Morgan has already etched her name into the history books of Kentucky women’s basketball. She currently holds the single-game assists record, tying Patty Jo Hedges-Ward’s 16-assist performance against USC Upstate in November. However, as the season progresses into February, Morgan has further solidified her legacy by breaking another record.

In a recent game against Texas A&M, Morgan recorded eight assists, with her third assist of the night securing the Kentucky single-season assists record. The previous mark was set by Georgia Amoore last year, who tallied 213 assists over 31 games. Morgan, however, has surpassed that with 219 assists in just 26 games this season.

Following Kentucky’s victory over the Aggies on Thursday, Morgan took a moment to reflect on her achievement. “It’s a surreal experience,” she said during the postgame press conference. “I’m obviously thanking my teammates because they got to make shots for me to get that, but it just was great to leave my mark here even though I’m only going to be here one year.”

Kentucky head coach Kenny Brooks also praised Morgan’s contributions, highlighting her willingness to adapt and improve within his system. “I’ve been very fortunate to have point guards like that, and we wanted her as soon as she hit the portal,” Brooks said. “She was the one that I wanted. I felt like we could make that connection, and I’m extremely proud of her. I mean, it’s a new age. It is a new age of athletics where a kid — like she and I are going to spend probably nine months together, not even a year, nine months together, and the willingness that she has to get better — I’m not going to say she’s surrendered herself to me, but I’m sure there’s things that she would love to combat, but we don’t have time to argue.”

Despite occasional differences in opinion, Morgan has consistently focused on her work, which has helped her become one of the best point guards in the country and the best version of herself. “So, she’s done the best part of not shying away from the moment, she might think that I’m pissed at her, and she’s still going to call me and say, ‘Hey, can we watch film today,’ because we don’t have time to waste, and I credit her for that because it’s not an easy situation, especially in this position with a point guard coach to come in and try to get this thing and get on the same page in less than a year.”

When asked if she felt she and Brooks had finally gotten on the same page, Morgan was clear in her response. “We’re on the same page,” she said. “I know what he’s thinking, he knows what I’m thinking. It makes the game flow a lot better, makes my teammates feel more comfortable, and it just makes us all on the same page. I feel like we were definitely on the same page tonight, but as far as the season, I mean, every game I feel closer and closer, and that’s just what I wanted in a coach, and I’m glad I came here.”

Looking Ahead

Morgan’s journey at Kentucky has been marked by dedication, resilience, and a strong work ethic. Her ability to adapt quickly to Coach Brooks’ system has not only elevated her own performance but also contributed to the team’s success. As the season continues, her leadership and playmaking skills will undoubtedly remain a key factor in Kentucky’s pursuit of their goals.

For fans and followers of the team, Morgan’s achievements serve as a reminder of the impact that individual effort and teamwork can have on a program’s trajectory. With her current pace, it’s clear that Tonie Morgan is not just making a name for herself, but also helping to shape the future of Kentucky women’s basketball.
